DEWOLMADU IN SRI LANKA




The annual Gammadu ritual for the goddess "Paththini" is also known as Dewol ritual. This ritual has good , posperity and is associated with the tradition of low country (Phatharata) dansing. It is said that the first  Gammadu Shanthikarma was conducted by an indian king named "Seramana" in Ruwanwella.




The story of the past.

King Chola, who lived in India, was often disturbed by the sound of a sack. The enraged king ordered that the sack be killed.So the king's men pulled sack into a pond in the garden. Because of that the sack hated the king  and  born again in the same pond as a frog.

One day, King Seramana went to the garden and smelled a lily in the pond. The frog, hidden under the flower, went through the nose and sank into the king's brain. The king, who was so ill and couldn't cured. One day the king dreamed of a beautiful woman and he told about this to the preacher. King Seramana's preacher decided this is a curse  of goddess Paththini and to get rid of it the king should do a ritual in a buddhist country . After that they decided  to do it in Sri Lanka. Thus begun the "Dewolmadu " ritual in Sri Lanka.

Before the madu shanthikarma.


Before the  three days of madu shanthikarma should refrain from eating  meat and should clean an bath with turmeric and Kohomba.


Orumal Pideniya

The seven births of Goddess Pattini reminds the story of Pattini and sacrifices Orumala Pideniya. This will bring blessings to the Gammadu Shanthi ritual.

Hagging 

Hagala is the Chief Kapoor's costume depicting the character of Pattini Devi. A white cloth about 12 cubits long is used for this purpose, sprinkled with turquoise water, sprinkled with incense, and tied to the offerings.

Lightning the lamp.

All the essential oils of the ritual are washed freely, and then they are placed under the hood and the bucket. Pattini Devi and the Devol God shine lamps for all the major deities, appealing to the devotees for peace.

Flower  bedding .

Also known as callum shielding, the deity is worshiped by singing the attributes and power of God. Put on flowers, lamps and incense, the artists rotate and simultaneously dance and sing poetry.

Yahan dakma

In order to continue the dancing activities, we will be performing the low call, bed vision, kahadiya kothala and charcoal dumala lyrics.


Kala pandam

The first step is to clean the beech tree, which is about 11 cubits in height, and lift it in the middle of a drum - suck with a beech flower and a large torch on the top. It is made of four round gokkola purple vines (eagles) and placed in front of the divine bed. Then a number of drums are danced.


Pandam paliya




One dancer comes to the stage while the other performs drums and sings. The choreography is performed continuously and the singing continues. Afterwards, the two principal dancers dance with the torches, singing and dancing with resin.

Sudukurumba pideniya.

It is also known as the Evening Peace Prize. Prepare a bowl of rice and seven fish in a pitcher, wrapped in red, yellow and black cloth.

Bisokup situweema

In the first Gammadu Yagya, a queen of King Seraman planted a kapak to offer to Pattini. A piece of banana about four and a half inches long is used as a cut.

In the past, a sandalwood stem was used for this purpose. It is decorated with carved gokolas, tied with a cane of flowers on the top, and sprinkled with turmeric and placed in a custom-made seat. After performing the 'Gammadu' tradition of drumming and dancing, the queen is placed near the main bed.

Thoran Yagaya


The main component of Gammaduwa decoration is the Thorana. It is also known as Makara Thorana. Seven cubits high, it is made of bamboo and gokula. Once the pandals are recited the pandals describing the pandals are opened.

Thereafter, Chief Kapu arrives in a Helamba (Devabharana) hemp. It is then washed with turmeric, smoked, and then wrapped in a colander and placed on the altar. Chief Kapoor appears as a woman wearing a red tunic and a single color saree and wearing a thong, necklace and bracelets. Pattini dancing is performed only on pavada. Putting Mr. Kapu on the couch is known as the Helamba Betrayal.

Magul bera wadanaya.

First, the drummers wear the proper dress and seek permission from God and the church to play a wedding drum. It is usually performed for an hour and a half as a service to God after the betrayal of Colombo.

✴️Thelme dance.

When the lamp is lit by the twelve luminaries, the fat dances. It is said that at the first Gammadu Yagya, twelve Chola princes participated in the dance.

✴️Sanni kurumbara pideniya

Chief Kapu pays tribute to the demon Sani. They make a seven and a half fish dish.


✴️Muruthan piduma

The sacrificial offerings of the sacred milk of Kiribath and the Hathmaluwa, which are cooked for the sake of God, are brought under the eagles.

Pattini salamba Dance.


▪️Wahala Dance

Mr. Kapu adorns the roof of his dress and his hat in a carriage dance for the God of Pattini and the Dharmamunda. It is believed to represent the power of God and the chase of demons and demons.


▪️Milla kapima.

The milling ritual is used for fire-fighting and a millet plant is used outside the premises of Gammaduwa.



This depicts how Pattini, or Kannagi, came to life after the killing of Kovalan in the Pattini story.

▪️Dolaha pelapaliya.

In the name of the God of the Doha, twelve sacred ceremonies called Dummala, Kahadiya Kothala, Mottekkiliya, Kuda, Kodiya, Sesatha, Elephant, Mima, Daula, Thammatitama, Kombuwa and Nalawa are offered.

▪️Gini pagima

This is the only occasion where Pattini and Devol are offered simultaneously.

▪️Garayakuma.

It is believed that after the milk spraying and sprinkling of turmeric, the last part of the gammadura will be cleaned and the eyes and ears will be affected by the stink. There is a sarcastic conversation between the teacher and the teacher.

Most of us are unaware of our traditional cultural features, such as the Gammadu rituial. These articles try to reintegrate them as much as possible. It is important for us to preserve our cultural heritage in order to preserve ancient things.
